News Update: Weakley Withdraws his 25 Pound California Bass from World Record Consideration
After the San Diego Union Tribune reported Monday that Mac Weakley caught a 25 pound 1 ounce largemouth bass from Lake Dixon, outside of San Diego on Monday morning, March 20, 2006, the controvery began. Because Weakley's bass was foul-hooked -- caught by hooks on the side of its body, not in the mouth -- Weakley decided to withdraw his bass from consideration for the record largemouth title. In an interview earlier this week, Weakley conceeded that he released the bass without taking measurements in part because he believed it would be disqualified for consideration anyway because it was foul-hooked. George Washington Perry's 22 pound 4 ounce bass, taken from Montgomery Lake near Jackson, Georgia in 1932, will retain its world title for the near future at least. ESPN has an article about the quest for the next world record bass, where it may come from, and who may take it. Click here to see it.

Yesterday's fishing trip to a private pond proved that buzzbaits are big-bass magnets when the conditions are nasty. Under a light rain and dark skies, Rob caught the seven pounder to the left and I pulled in a four pounder. This trip proved the pros are right in their advice on when and where to use a buzzbait. Read on . . .
Our goal was to set limb lines with small bream to catch big flatheads. No flatheads, but we did net a bass, a gar, a bowfin (picture above), and a table stand. Everything, in short, except what we intended. (This article requires Acrobat Reader to view.)
Under new laws, Georgians can now legally capture catfish with their bare hands (grabbling aka noodling). New spear-fishing laws are also taking effect, including bans on exploding spear tips.
